Earth Crisis

Earth Crisis is an American metalcore band from Syracuse, New York, active from 1989^[1]until 2001, reuniting in 2007. Their most recent record, Neutralize the Threat, was released in July 12, 2011 through Century Media.

Earth Crisis is known for supporting animal rights, promoting a straight edge and veganlifestyle, and addressing further social and political issues.

The band originally formed in 1989,^[1] but its initial lineup was short-lived. Karl Buechner, originally their bassist, formed a new lineup of the band in 1991, switching to lead vocals in the process. Buechner was joined by guitarists Scott Crouse and Ben Read, bassist Ian "Bulldog" Edwards and drummer Michael Riccardi.

1992's All Out War EP marked their debut release and established the band in hardcore punk and metalcore circles. The next year, Riccardi was replaced by Dennis Merrick for Firestorm; Kris Wiechmann joined shortly thereafter to replace Read. Destroy the Machines, their first full-length record, was released in 1995. Later this year, the band's touring van was involved in an accident that injured all band members, most severely Merrick. During his recovery time, the other band members began the group Path of Resistance with Riccardi and other friends to remain occupied.

Destroy the Machines was a particularly influential album for the emerging metalcore genre. In guitarist Scott Crouse's words,

It was a very mixed reaction. I'm often quoted as saying that Earth Crisis was the first hardcore band with a metal sound. Of course we weren't the first, but I think we definitely took it to another level. We heard a lot of, 'These guys are trying to be Pantera,' which we all took as a great compliment!^[2]

1996's Gomorrah's Season Ends brought a more complex and developed form of metalcore. Their popularity grew, resulting in a deal with Roadrunner Records, and the band released Breed the Killers in 1998, the first with guitarist Erick Edwards (bassist Ian Edwards's brother) replacing Wiechmann. The album also featured a guest appearance by Machine Head vocalist and guitarist Robb Flynn. The band later returned to Victory Records, releasing 2000's Slither soon after. With clear and professional production, it surprised some listeners and introduced the band's music to a wider audience.^{[citation needed]} Their final album before their breakup was 2001's Last of the Sane, which included cover versions of songs by The Rolling Stones, Slayer, Led Zeppelin, Cream and Dead Kennedys.

In 2001, Earth Crisis played the final show of their initial career at Hellfest in Syracuse.^[3][4]

[edit]Post-breakup (2002–2007)

After breaking up, Buechner and the Edwards brothers formed the band Nemesis, which was later renamed Freya. Other members remained musically active.

[edit]Reformation (2007–present)

On January 27, 2007, the reunited Earth Crisis played the Maryland Metal and Hardcore Festival. Although it was originally planned as a one-off concert, numerous American and European dates followed thereafter. Earth Crisis headlined the Firestorm Fest in early 2008, supported by Terror, Sworn Enemy, Shai Hulud, Down to Nothing and Recon.

On September 10, 2008 it was announced that Earth Crisis had signed a worldwide deal with Century Media. They entered the studio on October 16, 2008 to record a new record, and Tue Madsen was hired to mix the project. The finished album, To the Death, was released in Europe on April 20, 2009 and in North America on May 5, 2009.^[5]

In August and September 2009, Earth Crisis played America and Europe on the Hell on Earth Tour,^[6][7] alongside Sworn Enemy,Neaera, Waking the Cadaver, War of Ages, Thy Will Be Done and War from a Harlots Mouth.

In March 2010, they announced that drummer Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy and formerly Racetraitor will serve as a touring member for a portion of the band's upcoming tour, as Merrick will only be available for certain dates.^[8][9]

In July 2011 Earth Crisis released their seventh studio album, Neutralize the Threat. The album was mixed and mastered by Zeuss. The tracks "Raise" and "Total War" were released online as an album teaser.

Vision of Disorder is a hardcore band from Long Island, New York, US. Vision of Disorder disbanded in 2002, but reunited from time to time over the next six years. In October 2008, they announced that they would record a new studio album. Vision of Disorder supportedSlipknot for Slipknot's original line-up's last two shows, which included the Palladium inLos Angeles and Trinity of Terrors in Las Vegas.^[1]

Guitarists Matt Baumbach and Mike Kennedy formed the band in 1992 with vocalist/lyricist Tim Williams, drummer Brendon Cohen, and bassist Mike Fleischmann. Fleischmann left the band and VOD opted to perform during this fledgling period without a bass player.

Bassist Fleischmann later returned to the fold and the quintet went on to release a series of demos and songs on compilations before VOD released their seminal 7" record, Still(released on Striving for Togetherness Records) in 1995. This album includes the original versions of the songs Through My Eyes and D.T.O.

Around the time of the recording of that EP, the band was invited to participate inN.Y.H.C., a documentary on the New York hardcore scene. An in-depth interview was conducted with the band and two performances were captured; one in Newark, NJ and the other on their home turf of Northport, Long Island. The Northport show can be seen on the back cover of their 7".

The Still EP attracted a strong underground following, particularly within the Long Island's hardcore community. This was sufficient to earn the band a major label record deal. VOD's self-titled full-length debut was released in 1996, on Roadrunner Records' subsidiary label, Supersoul. It was lauded by many old-school hardcore aficionados for its mixture of innovative sounds built on traditional hardcore roots.

The album Imprint (released on Roadrunner Records), followed the band's self-titled two years later. This album received ambivalent reviews: many old VOD fans disliked their new creative direction, whereas many of the fans that Imprint had attracted appreciated the band's seemingly innovative sound. Imprint created a permanent rift between Vision of Disorder and some longtime fans who couldn't get past the band's mutated sound and the "raw" production values that their major label second record boasted. These "raw" production values stemmed from Roadrunner Records allowing the band only two weeks in the recording studio. The band was displeased with how the label handled the recording of Imprint and the two subsequently parted ways.

After touring in support of Imprint, Vision of Disorder became relatively inconspicuous within the heavy music spectrum. However, they eventually returned to the public eye, divested of Roadrunner Records and announced their plans to release For the Bleeders, acompendium of 9 demo songs that VOD re-recorded specifically for this record. For the Bleeders was released in 1999 on independent label, Go Kart Records.

Staying true with their desire to explore what they were capable of musically, Vision of Disorder released the southern rock-influenced album, From Bliss to Devastation, released on TVT Records in 2001. Using their own signature musical ingredients in conjunction with musical elements reminiscent of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, The band's TVT album debut was ultimately a commercial failure. The fans' reception was lukewarm as the old fans who withstood Vision of Disorder's approach with Imprint were even less impressed with this effort, and the fans who were introduced to VOD through their second record were indifferent towards FBTD's new and uncharacteristic sound.

Apparently frustrated by a lack of record company support from both Roadrunner and TVT Records, Vision of Disorder went on an extended hiatus in 2002, and eventually disbanded, as singer Williams and guitarist Kennedy formed the touring and recording metalcore bandBloodsimple.

VOD reunited briefly in order to play a 3-song "mini-set" during a September 24 show with bloodsimple., Berzerkers and Karnov (drummer Brendon Cohen and bassist Mike Fleischmann's current musical ensemble). The response to the set was positive enough for the band to play a full reunion set at 2006's Super Bowl of Hardcore in Manhattan. They reunited once again during the summer of 2006 for at least three shows to shoot footage for a yet to be released DVD.

In June 2008, a teaser trailer for the upcoming DVD appeared on YouTube. Shortly thereafter, the band announced that they would be reuniting again during the summer of 2008 for a handful of shows. First to be announced was an August 16 show at The Crazy Donkey with fellow NY hardcore band Mind over Matter as the opening act. As expected, both Patrick Corcoran and Robert Bob Foss were able to attend despite severe traffic that almost made it impossible for them to appear. At the same show, singer Tim Williams announced that they would be playing a second show on November 23.^[2]

After an almost two year delay, it was announced on August 12, 2008 that the new DVD, titled "Dead in NY" would be released November 11, 2008 via Koch Entertainment.^[3]

In late October 2008, after years of sporadic reunions, Blabbermouth.net announced that Vision of Disorder had in fact reunited and planned to record a new studio album for release in Summer or Fall of 2009. As confirmation, the band posted the news on their officialMyspace page shortly thereafter.^[4][5] Along with the promise of new material came an additional show announcement; VOD are expected to play at least one show on Long Island in May 2009, as well as joining Poison the Well on select date of the 10 for 10 Tours, which features 10 bands for ten dollars as the name indicates.

As of July 2009, the band is still hard at work writing new material with nine or ten songs written. They've already recorded one demo with plans to record a second that they will shop to record labels. The new material has been described as very Imprint-like with newer sounds as well as some classic hardcore tones.^[6]

In March 2010, Tim Williams confirmed that the band has had a short break, but they have managed to write about 19 songs from which they are picking about 11 to the new album.^[7] They hope to get the album out within the next 6 months.^[8]

In August 2010 the band revealed via an interview with Horns Up Rocks that they will begin recording five new songs in the next few weeks to shop to interested labels. Further plans have the group officially beginning the recording of their next album in the winter. An early 2011 release date is currently being eyed.^[9]

In December 2010, Tim Williams confirmed that the band will enter the studio in early march for a late 2011 release. The band also supported Life Of Agony and Biohazard in New York City.^[10]

On March 13, 2011, Vision of Disorder appeared on a poster and audio clip on the official Glassjaw website [1] hinting at a support slot on Glassjaw's upcoming UK mini tour. This turned out to be the flyer for the March 24th show at Best Buy Theater with Mind over Matter and Vision of Disorder supporting. Tim Williams announced during their set that they're not going to play another new show until the album is done.

On July 2011 the first single from the new album called The Enemy was released to the internet.

On May 17, 2012, Vision of Disorder revealed the title of their new upcoming album, The Cursed Remain Cursed. It is due in late 2012.

Straight edge

Straight Edge adalah sebuah gaya hidup, filosofi dan pergerakan anak muda yang menganut anti penggunaan narkoba, penggunaan minuman beralkohol, merokok dan hubungan sex bebas (casual sex), walaupun pergerakan garis keras yang lebih dalam mereka menghidari penggunaan obat secara menyeluruh (termasuk penggunaan secara medis) dan mereka mempercayai bahwa sex tidak untuk berganti-ganti pasangan.

Straight edge hanyalah sebuah motivasi hidup untuk tidak merusak diri sendiri dengan mengonsumsi zat-zat/ hal-hal yang dianggap berbahaya untuk diri sendiri dan penyikapannya kembali kepada kontrol individu. Gaya hidup straight edge mencoba untuk memberikan alternatif baru di scene punk/ hardcore yang sangat identik dengan kebiasaan mabuk dan kerusuhan.

Banyak orang yang mengklaim bahwa dirinya seorang penganut faham ini karena mereka ingin mengontrol kehidupan mereka, berontak dari budaya penggunaan narkoba, menghindari diri berhubungan dengan narkoba, mereka menyaksikan efek negatif dari penggunaan narkoba dalam keluarga atau teman-teman, atau bahkan bisa pula untuk membedakan diri (Alfansuri 2007). Filosofi utama yang dibawakan oleh penganut faham ini adalah penggunaan narkoba terhadap lingkungan sosial dan krisis moral yang bisa menyebabkan hancurnya rumah tangga, bisnis dan khususnya kehidupan anak-anak remaja.

Ide tentang straight edge ini sebenarnya sudah ada di dalam lagu-lagu band protopunk tahun 70-an yakni The Modern Lovers. Namun istilah Straight Edge dicetuskan oleh band Minor Threat, band ini disebut sebagai dasar gaya hidup ini, dalam sebuah lagu mereka yang berjudul Straight Edge.

"Straight Edge" adalah sebuah lagu band Minor Threat dalam album EP pertama, mereka membantu menginspirasikan sebuah gerakan yang lurus (Bahasa Inggris straight edge). Lagu ini terlihat panggilan untuk pantang dari konsumsi alkohol dan narkoba - sebuah hal baru dalam musik rock, yang pada awalnya ditemukan hanya selingkup kecil, tetapi didedikasikan pada band-band berikutnya. Lagu ini berdurasi hanya 46 detik dan terdiri dari dua bait lirik.

Lirik utamanya adalah bagaimana band ini menghadapi berbagai penyalah gunaan narkoba seperti methaqualone, kokain, ganja, dan inhalant dan kehinaan bagi orang-orang yang menggunakan terlalu banyak obat-obatan, suatu hal yang umum selama dipertunjukkan underground. Lirik pada bait kedua yang mereka bawakan adalah mereka tidak akan memaksakan untuk memakai narkoba.

Pergerakan straight edge yang telah diikuti oleh beberapa orang sebenarnya tidak disangka oleh vokalis Minor Threat Ian MacKaye, ia menyatakan sejumlah kali bahwa dia tidak memiliki tujuan untuk membuatnya menjadi sebuah gerakan.

Huruf X adalah simbol yang paling dikenal dari straight edge, yang umum dipakai sebagai tanda di punggung kedua tangan, tetapi bisa juga ditampilkan pada bagian tubuh lainnya. Beberapa pengikutnya dari straight edge ada juga yang dimasukkan simbol ke dalam pakaian dan pin. Menurut sejumlah wawancara yang dilakukan oleh wartawan Michael Azerrad, logo "X" straight edge dapat dilihat jejaknya dalam pelaksanaan pada acara singkat band Teen Idles yaitu U.S. West Coast tour tahun 1980.^[1] Teen Idles telah dijadwalkan untuk bermain di Mabuhay Gardens San Francisco, tetapi ketika band tiba, manajemen klub menemukan bahwa seluruh band ini masih di bawah umur minimum dan karena itu mereka ditolak masuk ke dalam klub tersebut. Sebagai kompromi, manajemen menandai tiap kedua tangan anggota band Idles' dengan logo hitam besar "X" sebagai peringatan kepada seluruh staf klub agar tidak memberikan alkohol ke mereka. Setelah kembali ke Washington DC, band ini diberikan sistem yang sama oleh klu-klub lokal sebagai maksud membolehkan para remaja untuk masuk kedalam klub untuk menyaksikan acara musik tanpa memberikan alkohol kepada mereka. Tanda itu secepatnya diasosiasikan dengan gaya hidup straight edge. Dalam beberapa tahun, pada acara musik dan bahkan di klub-klub dansa telah memulai mengadopsikan sistem ini.

Sebuah variasi melibatkan trio X's (xXx) berasal dari hasil karya seni yang dibuat oleh drummer Minor Threat yaitu Jeff Nelson, yang mana Jeff menggantikan tiga bintang dalam bendera Washington DC kampung halaman mereka menjadi X.^[2] Istilah ini kadang-kadang dipendekkan dengan mencantumkan X dengan kependekkan istilah dari straight edge menjadi "sXe". Dengan analogi, hardcore punkkadang-kadang dipendekkan menjadi "hXc". Simbol ini dapat digunakan sebagai sebuah jalan untuk membedakan sebuah band atau seseorang yang menganut faham straight edge, dengan menambahkan huruf di depan dan belakang nama band, contoh band 'xFilesx'.

William Tsitsos menuliskan bahwa straight edge telah melalui tiga era yang berbeda sejak terciptanya pada tahun 1980.^[3]

[sunting]Oldschool (1970 - awal 1980)

Perkembangan gaya hidup Straight Edge ini banyak di adaptasi oleh band-band lainnya seperti, 7 Seconds, SSD, Uniform Choice,Cause for Alarm. Band-band tersebut adalah band hardcore punk yang berada di era “oldschool”. Band-band era ini lebih banyak berteriak tentang movement Straight Edge dibanding bernyanyi. Lagu mereka terdengar seperti orang yang sedang orasi dengan diiringi musik agresif dan cepat ala hardcore punk. Gaya seperti itu akhirnya menjadi ciri khas band hardcore punk di era “oldschool”. Pada awalnya paham ini berkembang di Washington D.C dan New York, kemudian akhirnya berkembang juga di Kanada.^[4]

[sunting]Youth Crew (pertengahan 1980)

Walaupun pada awalnya secara musikal, band-band straight edge terdengar tipikal, di pertengahan tahun 80-an musiknya mulai berkembang dan meluas sesuai dengan karakter band masing-masing. Era “Youth Crew” lahir ketika band-band hardcore punk Straight Edge mulai menjamur dan akhirnya mereka memiliki kecenderungan untuk bersatu membuat pergerakan dan media sendiri untuk menyebar luaskan gaya hidup straight edge. Namun bukan berarti mereka tidak manggung bersama band-band yang non-straight edge. Mereka justru lebih mengedepankan semangat persatuan. Suatu komunitas yang lahir karena memiliki sudut pandang yang sama: yaitu menyukai musik punk/ hardcore sebagai bagian dari subkultur yang tercipta saat itu. Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Bold, Youth of Todaymereka adalah beberapa band yang menonjol di era “Youth Crew”.

Ternyata seiring perkembangannya, straight edge mulai berkaitan juga dengan perihal pergerakan animal rights, vegan dan vegetarian.Youth Of Today adalah band yang paling lantang menyuarakan perihal hak-hak dan perlindungan terhadap hewan, vegan dan vegetarian pada tahun 1988. Dalam lirik lagu “No More”, Ray Cappo vokalis Youth Of Today menekankan tentang pandangannya terhadap hak-hak hewan dan vegan: “Meat-eating, flesh-eating, think about it/ so callous this crime we commit”. Sampai akhirnya banyak band yang menyuarakan hal yang sama dan hampir semua band pada akhir tahun 1980-an di Amerika dan Kanada menyuarakan tentang hak-hak hewan dan kekejaman terhadap hewan. Namun bukan berarti juga bahwa seorang vegan/ vegetarian itu adalah seorang straight edge, begitu juga sebaliknya. Menjadi vegan/vegetarian bukanlah sebuah keharusan di dalam gaya hidup straight edge. Vegan dan vegetarian hanya bagian dari perkembangan straight edge itu sendiri dan semua kembali kepada pilihan masing-masing individu.

Di dalam perkembangannya, straight edge juga sempat ternoda dengan beberapa militan dari band straight edge itu sendiri dan band yang paling menonjol dengan sikap garis keras dan militannya adalah Earth Crisis. Setelah gaya hidup straight edge sempat berkembang sampai ke perihal vegan/vegetarian pada akhir 80′an, pada awal tahun 90′an bermunculan band-band yang mengadopsi paham serupa namun mereka cenderung lebih militan. Militan disini mereka cenderung picik, mudah menuduh, minim toleransi terhadap non-straight edge dan berpotensi melakukan kekerasan.^[5] Mereka berpikir bahwa dengan metode gerakan yang keras dan militan akan lebih efektif dalam mempromosikan hidup bersih, padahal hal tersebut justru menjadi bomerang bagi mereka sendiri dan tentunya straight edge saat itu sempat tercoreng dan mulai menjadi bahan cemoohan di kalangan underground.

[sunting]Era 2000-an

Seiring dengan jalannya waktu dan lahirnya band-band baru, cap negatif terhadap straight edge berangsur-angsur pulih. Komunitas dan band-band straight edge tahun 2000′an mempersatukan kembali kultur punk rock kepada kondisi awalnya yang lebih toleran terhadap komunitas dan band-band lain yang non-straight edge. Kalangan straight edge mengalami pendewasaan, mereka sudah berbaur di satu panggung dengan band-band yang non-straight edge. Mengingat straight edge adalah gaya hidup yang lebih ke arah pilihan pribadi.
